NIRCA Nats Didn’t Disappoint!

Today is a great day!

Do you want to know why? Our women’s team is officially NATIONAL CHAMPIONS for the THIRD year in a row! The men’s team also did awesome, fighting fierce competition to finish 3rd place overall for the SECOND top three finish in a row! That’s right, in case you missed it, this past weekend, April 6th-7th, we went to the NIRCA Track and Field National Championships in Richmond, Virginia, where we fought hard, and came out incredibly victorious! Without further ado, let’s dive right into these monumental nationals!

As usual, let’s start things off with the women’s 100m dash. Ari Afolabi, in an incredible display of speed, ran a 12.61 in the prelims, and then smashed that time to run a 12.49 in the finals, claiming a 2nd place finish! Melissa Aninagyei-Bonsu was close behind, actually beating Ari in the prelims with her time of 12.46, but Ari edged her out during the finals, with Melissa’s incredible time of 12.61 earning her a 4th place finish. Ninawa Odicho may have barely missed the qualifications for finals, but she still ran an awesome time of 12.89 to earn a 10th-place finish. Next up was Bella Brunke, who went out and ran a speedy 13.53, just barely holding off her fellow teammate Christina Jordan, who came in just a few milliseconds behind with a 13.69. Sumin Cho started her Saturday with a great performance, running a 14.45. Leah Wilson came out and had a similarly great day, running a speedy time of 15.29. Closing us out was Christina Li, who ran a great time of 15.29

You’ll never guess who won on the men’s side. It was, of course, Mr All-American himself Tyler Klein, who sailed through the prelims with a winning time of 10.89, and then left the competition in the dust with his time of 10.53 in the finals, setting a NEW NIRCA RECORD in the process! Nic Soto wasn’t about to let Tyler steal all of the glory, his time of 11.20 earned him a direct trip into the finals, where he improved to run an 11.12 to claim 5th place and a new PR! Our next thee Illini ran in a super pack, all within .1 seconds of each other. John Green led the pack with his superb 11.44, Michael VanHootegem was close behind with his time of 11.48, and Adam Adil closed out this speed trio with his time of 11.53. Ethan Hung took a break from his awesome Insta Takeover to go out and run an even awesome 11.76. Ryan Fredericks improved on his time from last week by 0.2 seconds to run a 12.02. Sean Vibhatasilpin had a similarly great day, running a time of 12.15. The next two athletes came in just milliseconds apart, with Sanyu Kumaran running a 12.44 to just barely come ahead of Tanav Palisetti with his time of 12.52. Brandon Perruquet closes us out with a speedy time of 13.46, a great way to end an event full of great times!

For the 100m hurdles, we had 3 women compete, and they dominated the competition, all finishing in the top 4! Ari Afolabi once again led the group, running an incredible time of 15.43 to claim 1st place, finishing over 0.5 seconds in front of the second-place runner. That second-place competitor was closely followed by Christina Jordan, who came in with an amazing time of 16.24 for a 3rd-place finish. Brooke Bouwens rounded out this speed trio with her own awesome time of 17.12 to claim 4th place!

The men’s 110m hurdles shared a similar story of domination. Ben Cooper led for the Illini, with his incredible time of 15.64, only missing 1st place by 0.1 seconds while running in a slow heat and placing him in 2nd place overall with a new PR. Michael VanHootegem was just milliseconds behind, with his amazing time of 15.74  earning himself 3rd place overall and a new PR. Matas Carmichael wasn’t far behind, running an awesome time of 17.48 to close out this awesome event group!

Moving on to the 200m, Ninawa Odicho had a great day in this event, running 26.70 in the prelims, and beating that time with a time of 26.64 in the finals to claim 6th place! Ari Afolabi continued her winning streak in this event as well, with her time of 26.88 to earn a 10th place finish, finishing just milliseconds ahead of her teammate Melissa Aninagyei-Bonsu, who finished in a time of 27.14. Tyler Vizgirda was close behind, twinning his heat with a speedy time of 22.89 to claim 10th place. Nic Soto followed close behind, winning his heat as well with an awesome time of 23.04. Matas Carmichael kept up the trend of winning heats with his time of 23.92, just narrowly beating out his teammate Adam Adil with his time of 24.06. Our next two athletes finished just 0.009 seconds apart from each other, with Ben Cooper ultimately coming out on top over Ryan Fredericks, both running a 24.13. Keeping up with the trend, our next two athletes also finished just 0.01 seconds apart, with Sean Vibhatasilpin ending up victorious over Ethan Hung with times of 24.18 and 24.19, respectively. Reiss Christensen closes out this group of stellar performances with her own speedy time of 1:14.26.

Tyler Klein displayed his speed once again in the 400m, running a stellar 48.90 to claim yet another 1st-place finish! Continuing the domination of the Tylers, Tyler Vizgirda ran an awesome time of 52.54, and on the scoreboard, was able to just edge out the next competitor by 0.001 seconds to claim 10th place. Ryan Fredericks was up next, running a speedy time of 53.62. Koen Brown followed closely behind Tyler V throughout their heat, finishing just seconds behind with a time of 54.69. Luke Nelson had a great day, running an awesome time of 55.71. Brandon Perruquet also came out and had a great run, running a speedy 1:08.12.

Even with the added challenge of hurdles in the 400m hurdles, our women continued to thrive, with our 2 athletes both finishing in the top 3. Brooke Bouwens led for this event, coming in with an incredible time of 1:07.89, almost 3 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, to claim 1st place! Once again, all these times and victories added up, with the women’s team winning the national championship, and the men finishing in a competitive third place! As we conclude, I also want to give a huge shoutout to Travel Coordinator Bella Brunke! None of this would be possible without all the work she put into getting the team a 12+ hour drive to Virginia and back with no issues, so huge kudos to all the work she put in!

This may have been our national championship, but we are nowhere close to being done with the track season. Next Saturday, April 13th, we’re heading to Greenville University for the Greenville Select, we’ll see you there!

Until next time,

Orange and Blue Crushed Big Blue!

Happy April!

Welcome back to our second meet of the outdoor season. This also marks a very special occasion, we’re only 1 week out until NIRCA Nationals in Virginia! Before we get to that, however, let’s celebrate all the great performances that occurred at the Big Blue Classic at Eastern Illinois University on Saturday, March 29th. Let’s get into it!

As always, we’ll start things off with the women’s 100m dash. Ari Afolabi led off the day with a speedy time of 12.76, earning her an incredible 8th-place finish overall. Brooke Bouwens was close behind her teammate, coming in with a great time of 13.04. Christina Jordan and Lucca Bibbey had a great day and came in right after one another, running 13.84 and 14.24 respectively. Sumin Cho closed out the event with an awesome performance of 14.46.

On the men’s side, Michael VanHootegem led the pack, running a great time of 11.51 to come in 10th place overall. Our other 3 athletes had similarly awesome performances, and all ended up finishing within 0.4 seconds of each other. Adam Adil led the group with his fast time of 11.85, Ryan Fredericks was close behind with a quick 12.20, and Anthony Stewart closed it out with a speedy time of 12.26

Adding some hurdles to the mix, in the 100m hurdles, it was again a story of Ari Afolabi’s total domination, with her amazing time of 15.10 claiming a 6th place overall finish. Her teammates were right behind her the whole race, with Christina Jordan running a 17.05 for 10th place, and Brooke Bouwens just milliseconds behind, running a 17.10 for 11th place!

The men had an extra 10m to deal with in their race, but that didn’t stop them from destroying the competition. Michael VanHootegem barely beat out his teammate Ben Cooper by 1 millisecond, running a 15.92 to claim 7th place, beating out Ben’s 15.93, earning him 8th place.

For the 400, we had only two competitors, but they stuck together and provided fierce competition. Lucca Bibbey and Rachel Sakwa finished just milliseconds apart, with Lucca’s time of 1:03.84 earning her 7th place, and Rachel’s time of 1:03.98 earning her 8th place overall.

In the men’s 400m, it was time for the mid-distance runners to shine, led by Thomas Harmon, whose incredible time of 50.28 earned him an 8th-place finish. Tyler Vizgirda was close behind, with his time of 51.30. Ryan Fredericks used his Mid-Distance expertise to narrowly beat out John Burns, running a 52.64 to edge out John’s 52.99. Luke Nelson wasn’t far behind with his speedy time of 53.96, and Issa Fouani wrapped us up with his great time of 1:12.39

As a bonus of outdoor track, we get to enjoy a second hurdles event in the 400m hurdles! Today it was all Matas Carmichael, whose awesome time of 1:05.68 earned him a 10th-place finish!

We may have had only 2 women brave enough to compete in the 800m, but that didn’t stop them from having stellar races. Bridget Brokaw led from the start, running a speedy 2:22.34 to claim 3rd place overall. Brooke Silbernagel was close behind, coming in just seconds behind for a time of 2:27.42 to claim 6th place!

It was a similar story on the men’s side, where our 2 athletes also went out and crushed the competition. Freshman sensation Dakota Amar ran a speedy 2:04.16 to claim a 6th-place finish, just barely beating out Henry Hornbrook, who ran an awesome 2:06.26 to claim 7th place.

In the 1500m, Bridget Brokaw was the lone wolf, going out and running an awesome race with a time of 5:11.14.

In another installment of the East Coast showdown, James Stanley once again came out on top, with his incredible time of 4:03.01 to earn 7th place overall. Percy Moser didn’t let James get too far ahead, coming in close behind with his time of 4:03.72 for 10th place overall. Issa Fouani had a similarly great run, running a 5:19.77.

Outdoor finally marks the return of the spectator’s favorite event, the 3000m steeple chase. 2 women took on the challenge and crushed the competition. Suhani Peramanu led and had a great day, running a 13:21.46 to claim 6th place. Lia Tondeva followed close behind her teammate, coming in at 14:39.20 for a 7th-place finish.

Sadly no steeplechase for the men, but we still get to enjoy our distance dominance in the form of the 5000m. Today was all about future distance coach Ethan Forsell, whose time of 15:20.40 earned him a well-fought 10th place. Adam Gorcyca didn’t let Ethan out of his sight, coming in close behind with a time of 15:31.88. Gabe Inojosa was able to sprint at the end to narrowly squeeze under the 17-minute barrier, running a 16:57.38.

Closing it out for us was our awesome 4x400m relay team, who fought against the fierce competition to run a 4:02.75 for a 4th place finish overall.

That about sums it all up!

Make sure to tune in next weekend for the most exciting meet in outdoor track and field, the NIRCA Spring Track and Field National Championship at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia on April 6th-7th. We’re expecting a tough fight, but are hoping to continue the winning streak for the women’s team and steal a surprise victory on the men’s side. For up-to-date information, follow along on our Instagram!

Until next time,

15th Annual Club Relays Champions!!!

It finally happened!

After months of anticipation and excitement, this past Saturday was the Illinois Club Relays, hosted right here in beautiful Champaign, Illinois. The true highlight of the Indoor Track Season, Club Relays brings in 800+ club athletes to come and compete, making it the largest indoor NIRCA meet! We had over 100 athletes competing in this meet, so make sure to grab your popcorn, and find a comfy place to sit down, this is going to be a long one.

This club relay was truly one for the record books. This marked the 15th year in a row of holding the event, and in conjunction, marked the 15th year in a row where the University of Illinois was the champion of the meet! In addition, there were many astounding performances, records were broken, PRs smashed, and so much more, let’s get right into it!

Let’s get started with the energizing women’s 60m dash! Today, it was all about Melissa Aninagyei-Bonsu. Melissa showed up a bit late to the heat, and even with a little warmup, she went out and ran a 7.91, coming in 1st place and setting a NEW CLUB RECORD! Ari Afolabi also didn’t have the greatest start to the day, slipping before the event started, but that didn’t stop her from having an amazing race, running with Melissa for the whole race, and just barely being edged out in the end to run a PR of 7.93 for a 2nd place finish. Yelim Na may have been a bit rusty when it came to the block start, but the fierce competition led her to a strong PR of 8.87. Sumin Cho didn’t have the greatest start, but she still had a great race, and came in with a 8.92 to PR by 0.01 seconds. Christina Li had a great race as well, tying Sumin with her own time of 8.92, also a PR. Leah Wilson ran a great time of 9.05 to PR, and can’t wait for the rest of the season ahead. Chloe Trotter wraps us up with an awesome time of 9.48, a solid PR.

On the men’s side, it was just as exciting! The man, the myth, the legend Tyler Klein went out and ran a 6.82, casually setting a PR, NEW CLUB RECORD, and NEW MEET RECORD! John Green was up next, and he surprised himself with an awesome time of 7.27 for a great PR. Kevin Saju may have had a bad start but made up for it quickly, setting a season-best with his time of 7.30. Nic Soto was close behind, setting his season best with a time of 7.33. Sean Vibhatasilpin had a good race, with a speedy time of 7.49. Ben Cooper had a lot of fun out on the track, setting a new PR of 7.57. Alexzander Chu didn’t have the best day, sustaining a mild hand injury before the race, yet still running an impressive 7.80. Tanav Palisetti had a great race, running a 7.88 to set a new PR. Sanyu Kumaran may prefer the longer sprints, but he still had a great showing of 7.92. Brandon Perruquet, even without his spikes, was able to run a great time of 8.64, almost tying his previous PR.

Hurdle time, or should I say Ari Afolabi time? In true club relay fashion, we skip every other running event and jump straight to the mile! It was a jampacked mile, with 9 heats on the women’s side and 17 heats on the men’s side! Bridget Brokaw led the mile on the women’s side, running a great time of 5:27.20 for 5th place overall and a new PR. Anna Jablonski was close behind, running a 5:36.14 for a new season PR. A quick reminder about the 4x400m relay at Club Relays. The first heat, or the competitive heat, functions like any other relay. For the remaining heats, it becomes a costume contest, as the teams not only compete to win but also dress up in the wackiest way. To get that started, our championship women’s team, composed of Lucca Bibbey, Brooke Silbernagel, Rachel Schaaf, and Carlin Hass, put on their rainbow tutus for this relay and ran an incredibly speedy time of 4:23.09 to come in 3rd place overall. Close behind them was the second team, unfortunately, no costume, but they made up for it in speed, as the team made up of Ninawa Odicho, Bridget Brokaw, Anna Jablonski, and Rachel Sakwa ran an impressive 4:25.81 for a 4th place finish. Next up was the team of fruits and veggies, made up of Reiss Christensen, Emma Bergmann, Lia Tondeva and Claire Casiello, who ran a speedy 5.11:30. Rounding it out the pitbull team, made up of Suhani Peramanu, Anna Zlatic, Alyson Ficca and Molly Braskich, who sped along the track in bald caps and button up shirts as “Hotel Room” blasted from the speakers, coming in at 5:17.65

On to the men’s side! For the men, it was the stellar team of Tyler Klein, Nic Soto, Thomas Harmon, and John Burns who sped past the competition with an amazing 3:25.01 to claim 1st place overall! Close behind was the second team, made up of Ryan Fredericks, Henry Hornbrook, Trevor Glancy, and Antony Rizk, who ran an impressive 3:33.67 to take 4th place overall. Next up, was the team of Tyler Vizgirda, Matas Carmichael, John Bledsoe, and Ethan Forsell, who dressed up as characters from the Hangover to spring to an epic 3:50.14. Next up was Koen Brown, Michael Rizk, Braden Cardamone, and Luke Nelson, who got together to run a super speedy 4:03.64. After them came the team of Henry Martinez, Alexzander Chu, Matthew Uthayopas, and Tanav Palisetti, coming in at a beautiful 4:13.45. Finally, rounding it out, was the team with a hurdle for a baton, made up of Saif Kazmi, Satyansh Yeluri, Gabe Inojosa, and Rayhan Khaja, who ran a great 4:21.19.

Ending our section on the relays is every distance kids’ favorite, the 4x800m. The women’s team crushed the competition, the team of Anna Jablonski, Bridget Brokaw, Carlin Hass, and Brooke Silbernagel, running an incredible 9:55.74 to claim 1st place overall! The second team had an awesome race as well, running an 11:20.32 in the team made up of Courtney Hall, Reiss Christensen, Christina Li, and Emma Bergmann.

On the men’s side, it was a fierce competition, yet our team made up of Thomas Harmon, James Stanley, Grant Miller, and Michael Rizk fought strong, coming in a close 2nd place finish with a time of 7:56.63. The next team up, made up of Braden Cardamone, Henry Hornbrook, Dakota Amar, and John Burns had a great day, running an 8:25.21 to get 8th place overall. The final team to close us out, made up of Ryan Fredericks, John Bledsoe, Jose Ocegueda Zuniga, and Luke Nelson ran a great time of 9:02.57

Field event time! Christina Jordan had an awesome performance today, coming in 1st place with a 1.60m (5’ 3”)! Bella Brunke had a similarly great day, jumping 1.45m (4’ 9”) for a 4th-place finish. Gwen Bottom closed it out also with a jump of 1.45m (4’ 9”), setting a new PR.

For the men, Jack Tolentino had a great jump of 1.70m (5’ 7”), coming in 6th place overall and setting a new indoor PR. Derrick Stokes didn’t have a great day today, but still had an impressive jump of 1.50m (4’ 11”).

It’s story time! Grab some popcorn, and hear about Melissa Aninagyei-Bonsu’s epic quest in the Long Jump. She finished 4th in the prelims, but felt off her game, even saying “I’m not even going to win this event.” She stuck through and went into the finals, but her first 2 jumps weren’t that great. “I need to lock in”, is what she said, and she did exactly that, jumping an incredible 5.41m (17’ 9”) to set a PR, NEW CLUB RECORD, and NEW MEET RECORD. Rachel Schaaf also had an awesome day, jumping 5.04m (16” 6”), just 10 cm off her PR to come in 4th place. Bella Brunke had an ok day, jumping a great 4.69m (15’ 4”), claiming 5thplace overall. Yelim Na, originally left after prelims, not thinking she would make finals. She did make finals, so she had to run back after a relay to jump, and still had awesome jumps, jumping a 4.59m (15’ 1”) to set a new PR and claim 9th place.

On the men’s side, it was Tyler Klein back on top of the action, jumping an impressive PR of 6.68m (21’ 11”) to snag 2nd place overall. John Green was close behind, jumping 6.41m (21’ 1”)  to get a 3rd place finish and come close to his PR. Ben Cooper had a great time, jumping a new PR of 5.94m (19’ 6”). Henry Martinez cut himself before his jump, but that didn’t stop him from having an impressive jump of 5.25m (17’ 2”). Jacky Lin closes us out with an awesome jump of 5.10m (16’ 9”)

Onto Triple Jump, Melissa Aninagyei-Bonsu (once again) took the lead for the team with an impressive jump of 11.35m (37’ 3”) to claim a 2nd place finish. Rachel Schaaf, even with little training, had an awesome day, jumping an impressive 10.98m (36’) to claim 3rd place. Ciara Shreeves wrapped up this day of impressive jumps with a jump of 9.53m (31’ 3”), a new PR and earning her a 7th place finish.

Tyler Klein just can’t stop winning. In his triple jump, he leaped an incredible 13.14m (43’ 1”), coming 1st place overall, and setting a new PR. Henry Martinez was close behind, with an impressive jump of 11.25m (36’ 11”) for an 8th-place finish.

Let’s head on over to the throws ring for the shot put. Mia Howard led on the women’s side with an impressive throw of 10.03m (32’ 11”), setting a new PR and coming in 2nd place overall. Tiana Foreman was close behind with an awesome throw of 9.15m (30’), a new PR, and also a 5th-place finish. Ivy Del Real closed out this impressive group with a throw of 8.58m (28’ 2”), also a PR, and claimed 6th place!

On the men’s side, Daniel Coxworth may have started shaky due to a bit too much caffeine, but that didn’t stop him from having an awesome day, throwing a new PR of 11.77m (38’ 7”) to claim 3rd palace overall. Jeffery Lefkowitz stayed strong throughout the day, almost matching his PR with an impressive throw of 10.82m (35’ 6”) to claim 4th place overall. Quinn Rivara had some great throws today, setting a new PR with a throw of 9.89m (32’ 5”) to finish in 6th place. Austin Simon joined the PR train with a great PR of 9.70m (31’ 10”) to claim 8th place overall. Frank Chavez had a great day as well, coming out and throwing an impressive 8.22m (26’ 11”). Mid-distance superstar Antony Rizk switched it up to join the throwers today, throwing a great 7.76m (25’ 5”).

Well, that about wraps it all up from this write-up! This was a long one, so thanks for sticking around!

This was a day full of super exciting and awesome performances, and was all possible thanks to the hard work of Nathaniel Lenning, our Home Meet Coordinator! He worked tirelessly, working with both the entire executive board and the event coaching staff to ensure that this meet went smoothly and every athlete had a chance to compete and have fun! Thanks, Nathaniel!

We’re off this weekend, and then it’s spring break! We’ll be back for a few meets in the spring, including most importantly NIRCA NATIONALS, occurring on April 6th – 7th in Richmond, Virginia! The full outdoor schedule will be posted soon, so keep an eye out!

A Quick Trip up North!

Happy Tuesday!

We’re only 4 days away from the biggest event in winter sporting history, the Illinois Club Relays, of course! Before we got to that, we had a small, but mighty group of runners head to our neighbors in the north for the University of Chicago Margaret Bradley Invite on February 17th. We had a lot of great performances, let’s get into them!

As always, let’s start it off with the women’s 60m dash. Today was all about Ari Afolabi, running an 8.08 to come first in the prelims, and then improving to run an 8.06 to claim 1st place overall in the finals, congratulations! Leah Wilson closed it out for the Illini with a speedy 9.25.

For the men, it was Michael VanHootegem all alone, but that didn’t stop him from having a great time of 7.40 to claim 10th place in the prelims.

In the 60m hurdles, it was again the Ari Afolabi show, running a 9.15 to come second in the prelims, and then a 9.29 to come in 2nd place in the finals, wow! Christina Jordan had a great day in the hurdles as well, running a 10.07 to come sixth in the prelims, then following that up with a great 10.25 to come 6th overall in the finals!

On the men’s side, Michael VanHootegem had an awesome race, running a 9.02 to come fourth in the prelims, and then running a 9.27 to come in 7th in the finals. Michael had some company for this event, Ben Cooper, who ran a great time of 9.31, coming in 9th in the prelims.

It’s 200m time. You thought she was done, but Ari Afolabi still has more to show off, running a speedy 27.47 to come in 6th place overall, she’s unstoppable! Lucca Bibbey ran under Zainab Ibrahim, running an awesome time of 29.13 with a 3rd-place finish in her heat. Sumin Cho wasn’t far behind, running a great time of 31.06.

Michael VanHootegem was all alone again for the 200m but still showed up with an impressive time of 24.02.

In the 400m, Lucca Bibbey was all alone for the Illini and still crushed the competition, running a 1:03.68 to win her heat and come in 8th place overall.

Tyler Klein, in his usual fashion, ran an incredible 49.48 for a 1st place overall finish, beating out his second-place opponent by almost 2 seconds, crazy! Luke Nelson had a similarly impressive day, coming second in his heat with a time of 54.40 for a 10th-place overall finish. Dante Ragozzino continued the trend and came second in his heat with a great time of 1:01.19.

Everyone’s favorite Air Force Cadet Percy Moser was close behind James with his incredible time of 4:29.63 to come in 7th place. Chicago native Gabriel Inojosa was right behind, running a speedy 4:59.38. Nathaniel Lenning took a break from planning Club Relays to run an awesome time of 5:20.76, with Jose Ocegueda Zuniga right on his tail with a time of 5:24.30.

In the 3000m run, it was Annika Luthe representing the Illini with a great time of 12:55.96.

Skipping right to the jumps, let’s take a look at the men’s long jump. Henry Martinez led in this event with a great jump of 5.56m (18’ 3”). Ben Cooper was close behind with an awesome jump of 5.33m (17’ 6”), with both athletes coming first and third, respectively in their flight!

Let’s go straight to the women’s high jump. Both of our amazing athletes, Bella Brunke and Gwen Bottom tied for 7th place with an awesome jump of 1.42m (4’ 8”).

That’s gonna be all for this week!

As I said before, our team this week was smaller, as many of our athletes took the week off to prepare for the awesome, amazing, the incredible Illinois Club Relays, happening next Saturday, February 27th right here in Champaign at the University of Illinois Armory. We’ll start live coverage when the meet starts at 11:00, so make sure to tune in for the centerpiece of winter track and field!

Until next time,

The Return to Jacksonville!

Welcome Back!

Just 2 weeks ago, we had an awesome time over in Jacksonville IL at Illinois College. In fact, we loved it so much that we went back again this weekend, competing in the 2024 Jim Green Invite. We went back and were better than ever, so without further ado, let’s get into the write-up!

Let’s start things off with our recently #1 ranked women, in the 60m dash. It was a great day for Ari Afolabi whose time of 8.12 earned her second place in the preliminaries and a spot in the finals, where she ran an 8.057, coming in 2nd place, just 0.04 seconds off the first place finisher! Right behind her was Ninawa Odicho,  who easily qualified for finals with an 8.281 in the prelims, and finished with an 8th place overall finish, with an 8.43Brooke Bouwens wasn’t far behind her teammates, coming in at 8.34 for a 10th place finish in the prelims and a large pr! Taking a break from designing fire merch, David Welte-Hart ran a beautiful 7.897, coming out just a few milliseconds ahead of teammate Tanav Palisetti, who ran a 7.93.

It’s hurdle time, or I should say, it’s Ari Afolabi time! After her impressive 2nd place finish in the 60m, she came with a vengeance to the 60m hurdles, running a 9.61 in the prelims, and then an impressive 1st place finish of 9.45 in the finals, 0.3 seconds ahead of the competition, congrats! Not to be outdone, Christina Jordan had a similarly awesome hurdles day, running a 10.72 in the prelims, and a speedy 10.56 in the finals, a pr of almost 2 seconds, a great 4th place finish!

For the men, it was everyone’s favorite highland resident Easton Rosen, starting his track season with a speedy 4:22.81, claiming a 2nd place finish, only 0.5 seconds off the leader! After his impressive 800m, John Wiser flexed his distance muscles, running a quick 4:25.01 to claim 4th place! Close behind Dakota was Declan Ahern, who ran an impressive 4:45.18. Orange Krush staple Henry Hornbrook slid right under the 5-minute mark, coming in at 4:59.11. ECE Wizard Gabe Inojosa had a great race, coming in at 5:10.60. Rounding it out was Gabe Benson, coming in at 5:54.53.

Time to put the distance in long distance with the 3000m, and it was Claire Casiello leading the women, whose impressive 10:58.96 was quick enough to grab a 3rd.place finish! Lia Tondeva was the only other woman brave enough to run the 3k, running a 13:10.47 to claim 8th place.

On the men’s side, it was the pride of Oswego Ethan Forsell, who casually took 2nd place with his incredible 8:50.84Aidan Markiewicz was the only other Illini in the 3k, but that didn’t stop him from running a great 10:21.93.

It’s relay time! The women’s 4x200m team composed of Sumin Cho, Christina Li, Leah Wilson, and Ari Afolabi ran a great time of 2:01.19 to claim 3rd place! The men’s team matched the women and also came in 3rd place, that team was made up of Adam Adil, Kevin Saju, Tyler Vizgirda, and Ryan Fredericks, running a 1:37.17.

The story was similar for the 4x400m teams, who all had great days! The women’s team of Bridget Brokaw, Carlin Hass, Brooke Silbernagel, and Lucca Bibbey ran a speedy 4:27.44 to claim 2nd place overall. For the men, it was the B team that reigned victorious, the team of Nic Soto, Tyler Vizgirda, Ryan Fredericks, and John Burns coming in at 3:38.93 to claim 2nd place! A Speedy Start to the Semester!

Happy start to the second semester!

The Illinois Track and Field Club kicked off the second semester with a trip to Jacksonville Illinois to compete at the Illinois College Snow Bird Invite. This was the first chance for many athletes to compete this season, and proved a great way to start the season. After this first meet, it is clear that the club is here to compete! Let’s get into the event breakdown!

There’s no better place to start than the women’s 60m dash. James Lu, all recovered from an unfortunate injury, showed us he was back and meant business, going out and running an 8.24!

If running a 60m wasn’t hard enough, try it with hurdles! If that isn’t hard enough, try running a 60m Hurdles immediately after racing a 60m! The athletes had mere minutes between races, yet that didn’t stop them from running awesome times!

Leading the women, and the race, Ari Afolabi showed off her hurdles expertise, running a 9.36 to claim a 1st place overall finish, congrats! Christina Jordan, in her first ever hurdles race, showed off her natural talent, running a 12.94 to claim the 8th place finish!

Rounding it out for the men was James Lu, coming in with a gorgeous 28.24!

As the springs got longer and into the 400m, our women just got faster and faster. Continuing the Illinois dominance was Brooke Bouwens, running a 1:03.43 to take the 2nd place finish! Rachel Sakwa finished it off perfectly, running a 1:06.09, an 8th place finish!

For the men, it was the sprints coach Nic Soto who came in at 52.82, claiming a 4th place finish overall! The other two runners ran great times and finished just milliseconds apart, with Carter Bailitz running a 56.46 and Henry Hornbrook close behind with a 56.76!

Enough sprints, let’s get into the distance, starting with the women’s 800m. Anna Jablonski had a great race, running a 2:29.85 to claim a 2nd place podium finish. Right on her tail, Bridget Brokaw came in at 2:31.48, snagging a 3rd place overall finish. Close behind was Christina Li, running an awesome 3:12.63!

In the women’s mile, both competitors went out and ran awesome races and both came in the top 10! Claire Casiello had a great race to start her season, coming in at 5:41.26, for a 5th place finish and a pr! Our incredible fundraising coordinator, Suhani Peramanu, went out and ran a 6:06.81, claiming 8th place.

Close behind was Gwen Bottom, jumping a 1.40m (4’ 7”), finishing out the list with a great 8th place finish!

No men were brave enough to high jump today, so let’s move on to the women’s long jump. Melissa Aninagyei-Bonsu showed off her jumping abilities with a jump of 5.21m (17’ 1.25”) to get the 2nd place finish. Bella Brunke came in next with an awesome jump of 4.64m (15’ 2.75”) to get a 10th place finish!

Rise and Shine – It’s Track Time!

Hello Everyone, and welcome to the 2023-2024 Indoor Track Season!

I’m Adam Lupatkin, and I’ll be serving as webmaster this season, pumping out these write-ups and social media content all season long! Now, enough intro, let’s get into the write-up!

We started the season with a bang at the Olivet Nazarene University Holiday Invite. This meet can be tricky for many athletes, as it falls at the beginning of track training, and right after the conclusion of training from cross country, but our athletes went out, competed hard, and showed the world that the Illinois Track Club is here to compete! Let’s get into the event-by-event breakdown!

Let’s start with the women’s 60M Dash. The only Illinois woman brave enough to conquer the 60M, Ebba Burrows went out and ran a great race with an 8.36!

Moving on to the men, we have to start with the man himself, Tyler Klein. Tyler ran a 7.04 in the prelims, winning his preliminary heat and coming 4th overall in the prelims. He qualified for the finals, where he ran a smoking hot 6.94, coming in 2nd place overall! Sean Vibhatasilpin made for a perfect debut for his club career, running a 7.37 and coming in second place for the team! Not to be outdone, Ethan Hung came by close behind for his club debut, running a 7.56. Up with the newcomers, Club Elder Adam Adil definitely still has a long career ahead of him, running a 7.66. Making his debut, Alexzander Chu ran a beautiful 7.78, a great start for his season. Two more runners making their club debuts, Tanav Palisetti barely edged out Jacky Lin, with them running a 7.90 and 7.91, respectively. Jack Tolentino, in his debut, came out only slightly ahead of resident Club Elder Sandin Cuturic, running an 8.04 over Sandin’s 8.05. Rounding it out for the Illini, Brandon Perruquet came in at 8.54, a great way to start his season!

After racing for only 60M, our athletes were craving more, and many of them moved on to race in the 200M. We start it off with our women, where Zainab Ibrahim ran an impressive 30.06, and Gwen Bottom came close behind with a 30.62, a great start to both of their seasons.

I feel like I’m repeating myself here, but of course, we have to start on the men’s side with our resident speedster Tyler Klein. After coming in second in the 60M, Tyler said “Let’s do it again”, and ran a speedy 22.14 to come in second place overall, well done! Following his previous second-place team finish, Sean Vibhatasilpin let everyone know that he means business, running a 24.09. Adam Adil made sure to show off his speed in the 200, running a quick 24.83. Koen Brown woke up today and decided to run under 25, and did just that, running a 24.99 for his club debut. Alexzander Chu raced along Koen in the same heat, coming in at a 25.15 debut. Jacky Lin came in close behind in a 26.01, and if I can forecast the future, it’s only going to get faster from here. Sandin Cuturic, deciding today was the day to do it all, ran a 26.60, but believe me, this isn’t the last time you are going to see his name. Tanav Palisetti was right behind Sandin, coming in at 26.73. Brandon Perruquet ran a beautiful 27.35, capping off the short springs.

For those sprinters wanting a bit of extra distance, it’s time for the 400M. Along with his great performance in the 200M, Koen Brown came out and crushed the competition in his heat, winning his heat with a fire 55.11. Next came our Swiss Army Runners, the men who can do anything, Adam Adil and Sandin Cuturic, running 58.73 and 1:04.02, respectively.

Enough with the sprints, let’s get to my area of expertise, the distance events. Most of the men from the distance team were still building up after an impressive cross-country season, so it was the women who carried the distance team today. Sprints Coach Rachel Sakwa came out to display her expertise in both sprints and middle distance, running a 2:42.13 to come third overall in the 800M. For the mile, GMC Bridget Brokaw and Anna Jablonski ran together and raced a great race, Bridget running a 5:45.19 for a third-place finish, and Anna close behind with a 5.47.96 to claim a fourth-place finish.

It’s time to put the Field in Track and Field, and there’s no better way to start it off than with the high jump! Christina Jordan easily soared all the way up, leaping 1.60m to claim the first-place finish overall! For reference, that’s 5’3”, or about 11.25 iPhone X’s, wow! Making sure her teammate doesn’t steal all the glory, Gwen Bottom jumped a casual 1.40m, a perfect way to start her season!

On the men’s side, it was all up to the sole male jumper Jack Tolentino, and he didn’t disappoint, jumping an impressive 1.67m, or about 12 iPhone X’s, well done!

For those who don’t want to jump super high, they can always jump super far in the long jump! Ebba Burrows came out on top for the Illini with an impressive 4.79m, with teammate Zainab Ibrahim close behind with a 4.39m, great job to both athletes!

On the men’s side, it was the renaissance man Adam Adil himself, jumping 5.00m to come out on top for the team, showing he truly can do it all. After impressive performances in the sprints, Jacky Lin showed the team that not only can run, but also jump, coming in with a 4.80m, with revered club legend Sandin Cuturic coming in close behind with a 4.72m!

Last, but certainly not least, it’s our throwers! Although only having 2 throwers from the team were present, that didn’t stop them from having a great day, with Ivy Del Real throwing the shot put 7.76m and Jeffery Lefkowitz throwing the heavy metal ball 10.90m. A great first performance from both throwers, we look forward to much more to come!

That’s all from me folks! I hope you enjoyed it, and we look forward to seeing you again at our next meet, the Greyhound Classic at the University of Indianapolis on 1/20. Until then, have a great winter break, happy holidays, and Go ILLINI!

Cross Country Nattys: Show Up and Show Out

Well well well… here we are. Cross Country Nationals has come and gone, and the people look onto the many many laps in the Armory in their future. But, even if it is a little late (a lot late), we need to reflect on just how awesome Nationals was! From the Raps, the bonding with teammates at Bucca di Beppo, the triumphs and failures of waffle making, to the cooldowns after the races, there was a lot to be happy about. So let’s talk about it!

Setting up the tone for the day was the women’s Junior/Senior/Grad race. We had three entries into this race, and first up wasour secretary Alyson Ficca running a 26:56! Next up was Anna Winnicki, running a 44:47 and looking as happy as ever. Elizabeth Kokal rounded out our top three with a 45:18!

On the men’s side, we had six entries, just enough for a full team! First up was Nolan Enright placing in the top ten running 27:00. Nolan has been on a tear this season and we can’t wait to see what he brings to the table in track! Another person who’s improved their time from the start of the season, Gabriel Inojosa ran 29:09! Our treasurer Quinn Born was up next with a 30:11, a nice season PR before he heads to Australia next semester!President Cadyn Grafton was up next, showing that our governing officials can still boogie, running 30:52! Big-Handed Man Henry Hornbrook came in behind Cadyn with a 32:45! Track may be his preferred discipline but his love for running as a whole continues to shine through! Rounding out the men was Gabe Benson, with a34:28!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand now for the Championship Races! The women took 7th overall, a strong finish amongst a very talented field! Leading the way were

Diane Makovic and Joy Dudley, running 22:58 and 23:05 respectively! It is always good to see teammates working together, in crowded and long races it can be very helpful to have a teammate on your shoulder to motivate you! Claire Caisello was third for us today, running 24:07, wrapping up a great season! Suhani Peramanu was up next with a 24:43, she has continued to impress us all season in every race. Freshwoman Carlin Hass was up next with a 25:01, keep an eye out for her on the track! Up next was Anna Jablonski (TBJ) with a25:35! And rounding out our top 7 was Social Coordinator Bridget Brokaw with a 26:29! This group will be very exciting to watch in the spring, as it is a true mix of distance and mid-distance specialists!

And for the men, an 8th-place finish was bagged. Leading the way was Ethan Forsell, who got a very satisfying 25:56, he’s been looking for a sub-26 all season. Percy Moser was close behind at 26:15. Now folks, I haven’t told you yet, but this course was about 200m long, so as you’re looking through all these speedy times just remember that they’re faster than they say! So Percy was probably sub 26 through 8k as well! Easton Rosen came through at 26:37, a great time to round off his first season for the Illini! Adam Gorcyca (rumored to be the worst waffle maker in town!) also ran a26:37! Rounding out our top 5 was John Wiser, our fearless coach running himself a26:43. Another transfer, Kavin Prashaad ran 26:53 to wrap up a successful sophomore season. And last but not least, Spencer Nelson ran 27:39, showing that the “old dogs” still got it. This race was executed perfectly, with 5/7 getting PRs and everyone moving up many places throughout the race!

The last part of this lovely day was the Fresh/Soph races. These are always a blast to watch because it give a good look at what the future could look like for the club. While we had multiple Fresh/Soph runners competing in the varsity races, these still give us a chance to show off our depth. Leading the women was Annika Luthe, running26:42! Next up was Gender Minority Coordinator Anna Zlatic with a26:57, dipping under that 27:00 mark! Lia Tondeva came through the line next, running 27:32! Moira McKee was our fourth runner in this, running29:27! Allison Kokal rounded up our fresh/soph group at this meet, with an even 34:00!

The final race of the day was the men’s Fresh/Soph race, and let me tell you, these boys cooked. Many, many PRs were set and much fun was had. First up was Alexa Herrera with a performance Paul Vandersteen would be proud of, running 27:03 over the long course. Simon Hildy was up next with27:32 coming off an injury. Adam Lupatkin had himself a massive PR with a 27:35. James Stanley put a bookend on his first XC season with a27:52! Thomas Harmon rallied back for one more race this year with a27:57! Aidan Markiewicz also had a massive PR to cap off a breakout season, running28:30. Miles Maloney had a PR to set before letting loose in the 800 this spring, he ran28:48! Brendan Graven, our favorite de-facto townie also had a breakout performance running28:49! Jacob Duzan came back after having COVID running a 28:58! Aidan Farrell set himself a nice season PR with a 32:58! Jose Ocegueda-Zuniga showed that speed was on the grass today with a 33:17! And last but certainly not least was Akshay Belapurkar, wrapping up his first cross country season EVER with a34:37, taking over FIVE MINUTES off his first time this season!

We cannot finish this write-up without talking about the most important person to this whole trip: Laine Hackmann, our travel coordinator, has been working and stressing all year about how to get everyone to our meets, and she has done a phenomenal job. If we were in person right now, I’d ask for a round of applause. Maybe we could get one for her at the final board meeting. Thank you, Laine!

And to the seniors who may have run their last cross-country race, thank you for continuing to contribute to the sport of running. Your legacy will be carried on in club tradition, but don’t think you’re done quite yet because we still have track to worry about!

Good luck on the grass next year everyone! Now we hand it over to Adam Lupatkin to continue our coverage for track.
